The Suburban is the longest-running nameplate in the car industry, going back to 1935, and the Tahoe is its shorter sibling. Both are big, both are left-hand drive, and neither was really sold here. That puts some people off. In practice, My Car Import is seeing the Suburban imported more and more, and the route to UK plates is the same one every American vehicle takes.

The generations
Since the 1990s the Tahoe and Suburban have shared their underpinnings, so they change generation together. The Suburban is the long one, the Tahoe the shorter one. GMC sells close relatives as the Yukon and Yukon XL, and everything here applies to them too. Ages are worked out from today, 12 October 2026.
| Feature | Built | UK test | Import tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| GMT400 | 1992 to 1999 (Suburban), mid-1990s on (Tahoe) | MOT | 5% VAT if built before October 1996 |
| GMT800 | 2000 to 2006 | MOT | 10% duty + 20% VAT |
| GMT900 | 2007 to 2014 | MOT | 10% duty + 20% VAT |
| K2XX | 2015 to 2020 | MOT or IVA, check the build date | 10% duty + 20% VAT |
| T1XX | 2021 onwards | IVA | 10% duty + 20% VAT |
Two lines cut through the table. An early GMT400 built before October 1996 is over 30, so if it is still in original condition it can qualify for 5% VAT and no duty. A K2XX built before October 2016 is over 10 and takes an MOT, while a later one takes an IVA test.
Older Suburbans
Suburbans go back much further than the Tahoe, and older ones come over as classics. Anything over 40 that has not been substantially changed needs no MOT, and pre-1980 American vehicles largely avoid the lighting changes newer ones need. Our guide to importing a classic American car covers dating and the title questions on old vehicles.
Weight: the number that matters
Full-size SUVs sit close to the line that changes everything. The IVA test for cars covers vehicles up to 3,500kg gross vehicle weight, the most the vehicle can weigh fully loaded. A category B car licence stops at the same figure.
Older generations of the Suburban were offered in heavier-duty 2500 versions as well as the 1500. Those are the ones to check most carefully. Above 3,500kg you need a C1 licence, and drivers who passed their test after 1 January 1997 do not have C1 automatically. The approval route and yearly test change too, which our guide to importing a pickup truck sets out.
Send us the label. A photo of the certification label in the door opening tells us the build date and the gross weight in one go. It settles the test, the tax and the licence question before you buy.

The title matters most, because a UK registration needs a clean one to go smoothly. Our guides to buying a car from a US auction and buying a car abroad safely cover the checks in more detail.
Shipping a big SUV
We collect from anywhere in the USA and truck the vehicle to the port, mainly New York, Savannah, Houston or Oakland. US Customs wants the title, or a certified copy, at the port at least 72 hours before a sea shipment leaves.
As a guide, built from a year of real jobs, shipping a car from the USA starts from £1,450, shipping only. That is for a typical car. A Tahoe takes more room than that, and a Suburban more again, so expect the price to reflect it. East Coast sailings take around 2 weeks and West Coast around 4, with about 2 weeks before that for paperwork and loading. See the cost of shipping a car from the USA for what moves the price.
Import tax
A Tahoe or Suburban under 30 pays 10% import duty and 20% import VAT, worked out on the price plus shipping. One over 30 that qualifies as historic pays 5% VAT and no duty; HMRC's conditions are in our guide to the 5% VAT rate on historic vehicles.
If you are moving to the UK after more than 12 months abroad, with a vehicle you have owned for over 6 months, Transfer of Residence can make it tax free. The import tax calculator will run your own figures.
Lights, testing and registration
The DVLA registers left-hand drive vehicles without the steering being moved. American lights are the job: rear indicators that double as brake lights need to become amber, a rear fog light has to be added, the side markers need dealing with and the headlight beam pattern has to suit driving on the left. The speedometer already reads in mph.
A vehicle under 10 then takes an IVA test on our own private lane in Castle Donington, and an older one an MOT. Our dealer-level DVLA account lets us register it within 10 working days of passing. Our guide to converting an American car for UK roads goes through each change, and the Cadillac Escalade guide covers the Tahoe's luxury cousin.
Before you commit, look at road tax for imported cars and, if you drive into London or a Clean Air Zone, ULEZ and imported cars.
Questions people ask
Can I import a Chevrolet Suburban or Tahoe to the UK?
Yes. They ship from the USA like any vehicle, then need their American lighting changed, a UK test and DVLA registration, which we handle on our own site.
Does an imported Tahoe need an IVA test?
Only if it is under 10 years old. Today that means the current generation and K2XX trucks built from October 2016. Older ones take an MOT.
Is a Suburban over 3,500kg?
It depends on the version, so check the gross vehicle weight on the door label. The heavier-duty 2500 Suburbans from older generations are the ones most worth checking.
Does it cost more to ship than a normal car?
Usually, yes, because it takes more space. Our guide price from the USA starts from £1,450, shipping only, for a typical car, and a Suburban will come in above that.
Does a GMC Yukon import the same way?
Yes. The Yukon and Yukon XL are close relatives of the Tahoe and Suburban, and the same tests, lighting changes and weight checks apply.
