Cadillac Escalade import guide

Big, American and rarely seen here. What an Escalade needs to pass a UK test, why size affects the shipping, and what to check before you buy.

The Escalade is about as big and as American as a luxury car gets, and that is exactly the worry. Will it fit on a ship, will it pass a UK test, and will it fit down your road once it is here. The first two are routine for us: an Escalade has been through our yard, and full-size American SUVs follow a well-known route. The third is down to your tape measure.

The generations

Cadillac launched the Escalade for the 1999 model year, and it has been through five generations since. None of them is yet old enough for the 5% classic rate, so the age mostly decides the test it takes here. These lines are worked out from today, 12 October 2026.

Under 10 years old: IVA. 10 to 40 years: MOT. The 5% rate starts at 30 years, so even the first Escalades are not there yet.

The fourth generation straddles the line. One built before October 2016 is over 10 years old and takes an MOT; a later one takes an IVA test. The build date is on the label in the driver's door opening.

The ESV is the long-wheelbase version, and the EXT was a pickup-style Escalade sold for some years. Both import the same way, but give us the exact model, because length changes the shipping price.

Size and weight

A full-size SUV takes up far more room on a ship or in a container than a saloon, and it is priced that way. Our guide price is for a typical car, so expect an Escalade to come in above it, and an ESV more so.

Weight is the other number. The IVA test for cars covers vehicles up to 3,500kg gross vehicle weight, and a category B car licence stops at the same figure. That is the most the vehicle is allowed to weigh fully loaded, printed on its label, not what it weighs on the drive. Check it before you buy, particularly on a long-wheelbase car. Our guide to importing a pickup truck explains what changes above the line.

Measure first. Your drive, your garage and the car park at work. An Escalade is a lovely thing to own and an awkward thing to park, and it is far easier to find that out before it is on a ship.

The Escalade IQ

The Escalade IQ is the electric version. A large battery changes how a vehicle is declared for shipping, and a US-market car may not have the charging socket UK chargers use. Read shipping an electric car to the UK before you buy one, and tell us it is an IQ when you ask for a quote. Being under 10 years old, it takes an IVA test like any new Escalade.

What to check before you buy

The title matters most. A UK registration really needs a clean title to go smoothly, so a cheap Escalade with a branded title may not be the bargain it looks. Our guides to buying a car from a US auction and checking the mileage on an imported car are worth reading first.

Shipping from the USA

We collect from anywhere in the USA and truck the car to the port, mainly New York, Savannah, Houston or Oakland. US Customs wants the title, or a certified copy, at the port with the car at least 72 hours before it sails, plus a lienholder's letter if there is a loan on it.

As a guide, built from a year of real jobs, shipping a car from the USA starts from £1,450, shipping only. East Coast sailings take around 2 weeks and West Coast around 4, with about 2 weeks before that for paperwork and loading. The cost of shipping a car from the USA explains what moves the price, size above all.

Import tax

An Escalade pays 10% import duty and 20% import VAT, worked out on the price plus shipping. VAT is charged on top of the duty. On a large, valuable SUV that is a real sum, so run it through the import tax calculator before you agree a price.

If you are moving to the UK after more than 12 months abroad, and have owned the car for over 6 months, Transfer of Residence can bring it in with no tax at all. HMRC's approval needs to be in place before the car arrives.

The DVLA registers left-hand drive cars without the steering being moved, so the Escalade stays as built. American lights are the work: the rear indicators usually flash red and need to be amber, there are side markers to deal with, a rear fog light has to be added, and the headlights need setting for driving on the left. The speedometer already reads in mph.

Then a car under 10 takes an IVA test on our own lane, and an older one takes an MOT. Our dealer-level DVLA account lets us register it within 10 working days of passing. Our guides to converting an American car for UK roads and the IVA test explained go into the detail.

Two running costs are worth a look before you commit: road tax for imported cars and, if you drive in London or a Clean Air Zone, ULEZ and imported cars.

Questions people ask

Can I import a Cadillac Escalade to the UK?

Yes. It ships from the USA like any car, then needs American lighting changed, a UK test and DVLA registration, all of which we handle on our own site.

Does an imported Escalade need an IVA test?

If it is under 10 years old, yes. Today that means the current generation and fourth-generation cars built from October 2016. Older Escalades take an MOT.

Does an Escalade cost more to ship than a normal car?

Usually, yes. It takes more room on the ship, and the long-wheelbase ESV more again. Our guide price from the USA starts from £1,450, shipping only, for a typical car.

Can I drive an Escalade on a car licence?

A category B licence covers vehicles up to 3,500kg gross vehicle weight. Check the figure on the label before you buy.

How much import tax is due on an Escalade?

10% import duty and 20% VAT, worked out on the price plus shipping, unless you qualify for Transfer of Residence. No Escalade is yet old enough for the 5% classic rate.
