Importing a classic American car to the UK

Three rules favour an older American car, each with its own cut-off date. How they apply, plus titles and dating.

A classic car ready for shipping

A 1960s muscle car or a chrome-heavy 1950s cruiser can be bought in America and shipped here, and plenty are. The worry is usually the paperwork: a state that never issued a title, a car with no obvious build date, and a DVLA that wants to know exactly what it is. Those are real questions, but they all have answers, and the UK rules are generous to cars this old.

This guide is about American cars built before 1986. For the general picture on any classic, including container shipping and marine insurance, see importing a classic car to the UK.

Three dates that matter

Three separate rules help an older car, and each one has its own cut-off. Two of them roll forward every year, and one is a fixed date set by GOV.UK. As of today, 12 October 2026, they fall like this.

The tax and MOT lines move forward each year. The vehicle tax line is set by GOV.UK and moved on 1 April 2026.
FeatureRuleCut-off today
Import tax5% VAT and no duty for cars over 30 that qualify as historicBuilt before October 1996
MOTNo MOT for cars built or first registered over 40 years ago, if not substantially changedBefore October 1986
Vehicle taxHistoric tax class, no vehicle tax to payBuilt before 1 January 1986

So a car built in 1985 or earlier ticks every box: 5% VAT, no MOT if it is unmodified, and no vehicle tax once the exemption is in place. GOV.UK is clear that you have to apply for the tax exemption. It does not happen on its own. If the build date is unknown, GOV.UK uses a first registration before 8 January 1986 instead.

Substantial changes

The MOT exemption only applies if the car has not been substantially changed. GOV.UK counts replacing the chassis, body, axles or engine in a way that changes how the car works. Restomods, modern crate engines and new suspension set-ups are popular on American classics, so this is worth checking before you buy.

A changed car is not a problem to import. It may simply need an MOT, and it may not count as historic for the 5% rate. The car still has to be kept roadworthy either way, so we put older cars through an MOT as a check when we register them.

Old cars and US titles

US Customs and Border Protection normally wants the original title, or a certified copy, at the port before a car can leave. On an old car that can be the sticking point, because some states do not title vehicles past a certain age, or a title has lapsed over decades in a barn.

CBP has a route for this. Where a vehicle is not required to be titled, you show that the state has no ownership document requirement for it, and provide an original document showing ownership, such as a bill of sale, with two copies. You also certify in writing that the purchase was genuine and the car is not stolen.

For a sea shipment the documents and the car must be at the port at least 72 hours before it sails. We handle the export side, but the title question is best settled before you pay, while the seller is still keen to help.

Dating the car for the DVLA

The DVLA needs to know what the car is and how old it is before it will issue an age-related registration. American cars of this era rarely have a first registration date the DVLA can read, and older ones often carry a serial number that predates the modern 17-character VIN.

The usual evidence is a dating letter from the manufacturer or a recognised expert, photographs of the car and its serial number, and the American documents. On many classics the cowl tag and trim tag help tie the car to its build. Where the age or identity is in doubt, the DVLA issues a Q registration instead, which most owners want to avoid.

Ask for everything. Old registrations, build sheets, receipts and photos are easy to get while you are dealing with the seller and almost impossible later. Even a scruffy folder can save weeks at the DVLA.

Lights on an old American car

Older cars often have less to change than modern ones. A car first used before 1 April 1980 does not need a rear fog light, and My Car Import finds that pre-1980 American cars largely avoid the lighting issues that newer ones have. Headlights set for driving on the right still need attention.

Muscle cars and cruisers

The cars we see most are the muscle-era names: the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger, Plymouth Barracuda, Pontiac GTO, early Corvette, Mercury Cougar, AMC Javelin, Oldsmobile 442 and Buick GS. Alongside them come the cruisers, such as the Bel Air and Impala, and car-based pickups like the El Camino, which registers as a car here.

Desirable badges and packages are easy to copy on these cars, so have the tags checked by a marque specialist before you pay. We have model guides for the Mustang, Camaro, Corvette and Challenger and Charger.

Getting it here

We collect from anywhere in the USA, with enclosed transport to the port if you want it. The car is inspected and a condition report produced before loading, then it travels strapped down in a container that our own team opens in Castle Donington. It does not need to run. As a guide, built from a year of real jobs, shipping from the USA starts from £1,450, shipping only.

The 5% VAT is worked out on the price plus shipping, or on a valuation if the invoice is more than 3 months old. The import tax calculator will run your numbers, and shipping a car from the USA covers the full journey. For cover, My Car Import suggests a specialist insurer and agreed-value cover; see insuring an imported car.

Questions people ask

Does a classic American car need an MOT in the UK?

Not if it was built or first registered more than 40 years ago, which today means before October 1986, and has not been substantially changed. It must still be roadworthy, and we put older cars through an MOT as a check when we register them.

Do I pay road tax on a classic American car?

Not if it was built before 1 January 1986. From 1 April 2026 those cars can go into the historic tax class, but you have to apply for the exemption.

What if the car has no US title?

Some states do not title older vehicles. US Customs then accepts a bill of sale and your written certification, provided you can show the state has no ownership document requirement for the car.

How much import tax is there on a classic American car?

A car over 30 that qualifies as historic pays 5% import VAT and no duty, on the price plus shipping. Today that means built before October 1996.

Why would the DVLA give my car a Q plate?

A Q registration is issued when a vehicle's age or identity is in doubt. A dating letter from the manufacturer or a recognised expert, with good photos and the US paperwork, usually avoids it.
