The Toyota MR2 brought mid-engined handling to ordinary money, and all three generations have a strong following. Japan had versions the UK never officially got, which is why so many buyers look there. The worry is usually about tax and testing on a car that spans more than 20 years of production. The rules are the same for all three, and age decides almost everything.

Three generations
Every MR2 has its engine behind the seats and drives the rear wheels. Beyond that, the three generations are quite different cars, and owners use the chassis codes to tell them apart.

The AW11 is the light, sharp original. The SW20 is the bigger, faster car, and the Japanese turbo models are the ones most people import. The ZZW30 went back to basics as a light open roadster, sold in Japan as the MR-S, and some were fitted with a sequential manual gearbox.
What age means for each one
Every MR2 is now over 10 years old, so GOV.UK exempts all of them from vehicle approval. None needs an IVA test, and none has to have its speedometer converted to mph, as that rule applies to cars under 10 years old.
The tax picture is where the generations split. Working from 12 October 2026, every AW11 is over 30. SW20s built before 12 October 1996 are over 30, and the later ones cross the line year by year. No ZZW30 is close yet.
The earliest AW11s, built before 12 October 1986, are also over 40. GOV.UK exempts vehicles of that age from the MOT, as long as they have not been substantially changed. Plenty of AW11s have been modified, so we look at each car on its own merits.
What to check before you buy
The mid-engined layout puts the engine out of sight and the cooling pipes along the length of the car, which brings its own checks. Rust is the other big one on the older two generations.
Before you pay a deposit
0 of 8 done
A mid-engined car that has been driven hard by a previous owner can be a handful to sort out, so an independent inspection is money well spent. Our guide to Japanese auction grades explains how to read the sheet, and the Japanese import checklist covers the paperwork.
Import tax and the 5% rate
A car from Japan normally pays 10% import duty and 20% import VAT, worked out on the price plus the shipping, with the VAT charged on top of the duty. A car over 30 years old can instead pay 5% VAT and no duty, which takes in every AW11 and the earlier SW20s.
Age is the starting point. HMRC treats the reduced rate as being for collectors' pieces of historical interest, and GOV.UK's guidance expects the car to be in its original state. Restoration and like-for-like repairs are fine, but an engine swap, a big turbo upgrade or a reworked body can mean the car is refused. Our guide to the historic vehicle 5% VAT rules sets out HMRC's conditions in full.
Modified SW20 or AW11? Send us the details before you buy. We will tell you whether the changes are likely to affect the 5% rate and price the job both ways.
The exception to all of this is Transfer of Residence. If you are moving to the UK, have lived abroad for at least 12 months and have owned the car for at least 6, it can come in with no VAT or duty. The import tax calculator will run your own numbers.
Shipping an MR2
From Japan, RoRo is the usual route and costs less than a container. The car has to run and drive, and it should be empty. If you bought at auction, the auction agent usually arranges the trip to the port. A non-runner goes in a container.
As a guide, built from a year of real jobs, shipping from Japan starts from £3,575, shipping only. Door to door, the journey is usually about 5 to 8 weeks. The documents are the Japanese export certificate, the purchase invoice or auction paperwork, and your passport.
Getting it road legal
Every MR2 is right-hand drive, so the list of changes is short. The usual one is a rear fog light, fitted in the right position if the car does not have one. Japanese cars are no longer checked for headlight compliance, which keeps the work down.
We do the work and the MOT on our own site in Castle Donington, and our dealer-level DVLA account lets us register the car within 10 working days. If you have bought a car with a list of changes, our guide to importing a modified car explains what the MOT and the insurer will want to see. For the full route, see importing a car from Japan.
Living with one
The MR2 was sold in the UK too, so servicing is generally straightforward and many mechanical parts are shared. Japan-only parts, such as the supercharged AW11 engine or some MR-S trim, can take longer to source. Insurers will want to know the car is an import and whether it has been modified. Our guide to insuring a Japanese import covers what they ask for.
Questions people ask
Does an imported MR2 need an IVA test?
No. Production ended in 2007, so every MR2 is over 10 years old and exempt from vehicle approval. It takes an MOT after a rear fog light is fitted if one is missing.
Which MR2s qualify for 5% import VAT?
Working from 12 October 2026, every AW11 and SW20s built before 12 October 1996 are over 30 years old. HMRC also expects the car to be in its original state, so a heavily modified car may not qualify. No ZZW30 is old enough yet.
What is the difference between an MR2 and an MR-S?
MR-S is the Japanese name for the third-generation ZZW30, the 1.8 litre soft-top roadster. In the UK it was sold as the MR2 Roadster.
Is an AW11 MR2 exempt from the MOT?
Cars built before 12 October 1986 are over 40 years old, and GOV.UK exempts vehicles of that age from the MOT if they have not been substantially changed. Later AW11s, and modified ones, still need one.
Do I need to convert the speedometer to mph?
Not for registration. The mph rule applies to cars under 10 years old, and every MR2 is older than that.
