American Wranglers come in specs, colours and states of modification you rarely see here, and that is exactly why people import them. It is also the worry. A lifted Jeep with a light bar and a winch looks a long way from UK road legal. Usually it is closer than it looks, and My Car Import has worked with hundreds of Jeeps, from wartime Willys to the latest Wrangler.

Which Wrangler, and what it means
Jeep people use the factory codes, and each generation lands in a different age band here. The age decides the import tax and the test before registration. These are worked out from today, 12 October 2026.
| Feature | Built | UK test | Import tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| CJ (CJ-5, CJ-7 and others) | Up to 1986 | No MOT once over 40, if not substantially changed | 5% VAT, no duty |
| YJ | 1987 to 1995 | MOT | 5% VAT, no duty |
| TJ | 1997 to 2006 | MOT | 10% duty + 20% VAT |
| JK | 2007 to 2018 | MOT or IVA, check the build date | 10% duty + 20% VAT |
| JL | 2018 onwards | IVA | 10% duty + 20% VAT |
The late JK is the one to check. A car built before October 2016 is over 10 years old and takes an MOT; a later one takes an IVA test. The YJ sits the other side of a line: all of them are now over 30, so a standard one may qualify for 5% VAT.
Modifications: the real question
With most American cars the job is lighting. With a Wrangler it is lighting plus whatever the last owner bolted on. My Car Import's experience is that off-road lights will probably need adjusting, and a winch may need removing or modifying, before the car will pass.
Heavy modification can make an IVA test harder, because the examiner is checking the vehicle against build standards, not just its condition. It is rarely a dead end. It does mean we want to see a full list of changes before you buy, so we can tell you what stays, what goes and what it involves.

A standard or lightly modified Wrangler is the simpler import. If you have a choice between two similar Jeeps, the less modified one will usually cost less to make road legal here.
Lights and the usual American changes
Underneath the accessories, a Wrangler needs the same changes as any US vehicle. American lights often flash red at the rear, there is usually no rear fog light, and the headlights are set for driving on the right. A vehicle first used before 1 April 1980 does not need a rear fog light.
The DVLA registers left-hand drive vehicles without the steering being moved, so a US Wrangler stays left-hand drive. The speedometer will already read in mph. Our guides to converting an American car for UK roads and left-hand drive cars in the UK go through each change.
Classic CJs and Willys
The older Jeeps are popular for good reason, and the rules are kind to them. Anything over 30 that qualifies as historic pays 5% import VAT and no duty. Over 40, it needs no MOT, as long as it has not been substantially changed, and GOV.UK counts replacing the chassis, body, axles or engine in a way that changes how it works as substantial.
That definition matters on old Jeeps, which have often had engines swapped or bodies replaced over the years. Anything built before 1 January 1986 can also stop paying vehicle tax, once you apply for the exemption. Our guide to importing a classic American car covers dating and paperwork for older vehicles.
Gladiator and the 4xe
The Gladiator is a pickup built on the Wrangler platform, and it imports along the same lines: under 10 years old means an IVA test, with the same lighting and modification questions.
The Wrangler 4xe is a plug-in hybrid, so it carries a large battery. That changes how it is declared for shipping, and a US-market car may not have the charging socket UK chargers use. Read shipping an electric car to the UK before you buy one, and tell us it is a 4xe when you ask for a quote.
Send photos before you buy. A few pictures of the front, rear and underneath tell us more about a modified Jeep than a long description. We would much rather see them before you pay than after it lands.
Shipping and tax
We collect from anywhere in the USA and truck the vehicle to the port, mainly New York, Savannah, Houston or Oakland. US Customs wants the title, or a certified copy, at the port with the vehicle at least 72 hours before it sails, plus a lender's letter if there is a loan on it.
As a guide, built from a year of real jobs, shipping from the USA starts from £1,450, shipping only. Tell us the real height of a lifted Jeep when you ask, as it affects how it ships. The sea passage is around 2 weeks from the East Coast and around 4 from the West. See shipping a car from the USA for the full journey and container, RoRo or air for the choice of method.
A Wrangler under 30 pays 10% import duty and 20% import VAT, worked out on the price plus shipping. Transfer of Residence can make it nil if you are moving here and qualify. The import tax calculator will run your figures.
Testing and registration
We run one of only seven privately operated IVA centres in Great Britain, with the workshop and the lane on the same site. That matters on a modified Jeep: if something needs another look, we put it right and it goes back in the lane without leaving the building. Once it passes, our dealer-level DVLA account lets us register it within 10 working days. See the IVA test explained for what is checked.
Questions people ask
Can I import a modified Wrangler to the UK?
Usually, yes. Off-road lights will probably need adjusting and a winch may need removing or modifying. Heavy modification can make an IVA test harder, so send us a full list of changes and some photos before you buy.
Does an imported Wrangler need an IVA test?
Only if it is under 10 years old, which today means a JL or a JK built after October 2016. Older Wranglers take an MOT, and Jeeps over 40 that have not been substantially changed need no MOT.
Can a US Wrangler stay left-hand drive?
Yes. The DVLA registers left-hand drive vehicles without the steering being moved. The lights need changing for UK roads, and the speedometer already reads in mph.
How much tax is there on a Jeep from the USA?
Usually 10% duty and 20% VAT on the price plus shipping. A Jeep over 30 that qualifies as historic pays 5% VAT and no duty. Transfer of Residence can make it nil if you are moving here and qualify.
Can you import a Wrangler 4xe?
Yes. It is a plug-in hybrid, so it is declared as carrying a battery for shipping, and a US-market car may have a different charging socket from UK chargers. Tell us it is a 4xe when you ask for a quote.
Found your Wrangler? Send us the details, and the list of modifications, on the quote form and we will price it all the way to UK plates.
